Game 86: Yankees at Angels

Tonight at 10:05 pm (Eastern time), the Yankees take on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (translation: The Angels Angels of Anaheim). The Yankees took 2 out of 3 (4th game was postoned, I had tickets for it of course) from the Angels back in May, but the Angels are a different team now. They are back to solid fundamental baseball, and are only a half game behind Texas for first in the AL west. The Yankees will send Joba Chamberlain out to the hill, as he tries to get his stuff together (*hint – throw strikes* I know he’s trying, but it’s not working). The Yankees will be opposed by southpaw Joe Saunders, and they send out the following lineup via PeteAbe to face him:

DH Derek Jeter

LF Johnny Damon

1B Mark Teixeira – returning to a place where he says he loved playing, hopefully no boos

3B Alex Rodriguez

RF Nick Swisher

2B Robinson Cano

CF Melky Cabrera

SS Cody Ransom – I miss Ramiro Pena

C Jose Molina – making his first start since coming back from the injury, hopefully he can straighten out Joba

And the aforementioned Joba Chamberlain toes the rubber

He's back in buissness.

He's back in business.

Melancon returns

Mark Melancon has been called up from AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre. The reason he was called up was that the entire bullpen, except for Bruney and Tomko, was used yesterday. There has been no official word on who was sent down, but PeteAbe says Albaladejo is not getting dressed, so it’s probably him. I would really have liked to see Hughes sent down so he can stretch out in Scranton’s rotation, and then come back up after the All Star break and go into the rotation, it’s not happening though.

What’s going on?

There have been two terrible trades made in baseball today, luckily not concerning the Yankees. The first one was the Royals trading their top pitching prospect, Danny Cortes, and a single A pitcher for Yuniesky Betancourt of the Mariners. What were the Royals thinking? Betancourt was hitting .250 with an OBP of .278 earlier this season, and he is currently on the DL. I don’t get it. But wait, there’s more…the Mets traded Ryan Church to the Braves for Jeff Francouer. I’m not joking. The Mets gave away a guy who is hitting .280 with an OBP of .333, who can also play center (a position they need), for a guy who a guy who is hitting .250 with an OBP of .282, who can only play right field. I’m not sure which trade is worse, probably the Royals because they gave up so much. Your thoughts?

Hypothetically speaking of course

If you were the GM of the New York Yankees, and you had to trade one of either Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain, who would you trade? My heart tells me to trade Joba, because I love Hughes (while I still love Joba too), while my brain tells me trade Hughes because Joba projects to be a better starter. I don’t really know who I’d trade, how about you? Please feel free to comment.

Update 7:28

It’s official, Albaladejo sent down.

  1. What’s wrong with Joba? Another 4.1 inning outing, and he couldn’t pick up his defense. It’s not even about throwing strikes, his stuff isn’t there, and being in the pen wouldn’t fix that.

If he says he thinks he pitched well after the game I think I would consider a demotion to Scranton to get his stuff together, and really learn how to pitch.

PeteAbe brings up something interesting, when Joba left the game none of Joba’s teamates (except for Jeter who patted Jobas back) intercted with him…

  2. Joba Chamberlain is not tough and don’t have guts to pick up the Yankees defense!! I wouldn’t want to see Sergio Mitre up here to pitch in the major leagues as a Yankees starter instead of Joba Chamberlain!! But young pitcher struggles but Joba Chamberlain is getting to be unwatchable like Oliver Perez of the New York Mets!! Why didn’t Alfredo Aceves didn’t get sent down to the minors league to stretch him out as a starting pitcher and come back on July 21 as the fifth starter?

    • I think Brian Cashman wants to see Mitre pitch in the minors one game before making a decision on who is the fifth starter, that’s why Alfredo Aceves didn’t get sent down.
