Last night Mark Melancon made his major league debut. For some, it was overshadowed by the Yankees loss to the Red Sox. However, last night was an important night for the New York Yankees. Even though they lost, they got to see their possible heir to Mariano Rivera, pitch against the Red Sox in a heated game. Melancon pitched two innings last night. In his first inning he retired the side out in order. In his second inning of work he loaded the bases with nobody out on a single, a walk, and a hit batter. After that, he proceeded to get a force play at home, a strikeout, and then a groundout, without allowing a run to score.
Now, I know the best case scenario would have been for him not to load the bases. However, it is pretty impressive that he was able to pitch out of such a jam. We, as Yankee fans, can only hope that he continues to mature and develop into the future closer the Yankees view him as.
