Off-Topic Thread #2

The first Off-Topic Thread was starting to really fill up with comments, so here’s a fresh one to start some new discussions in. Remember, you can comment about anything you wish here in this thread. You may talk about baseball, the Yankees, politics, music, other sports, or anything else you can think of. Just refrain from anything distasteful.

  1. Hi Chris! Just saw after the game the Yankees place A-Rod on the 15 day D.L. with a strain left calf muscle. Ivan Nova called up from Triple-A Scranton Wilkes Barre Yankees to take his place on the 25 man roster. Ivan Nova projects to be a backend rotation type that what I heard. And the one time I saw him he throws a sinkerball. But I forgot what his other pitches in his arsenal. Ivan Nova is starting Monday!

    • Hey Steven. I just put up a post about this seconds ago. I believe that Nova throws a pretty hard fastball (which may be more of a sinker, I don’t really know), a nice change-up, and a curveball. I could be wrong though.

  2. Hi Chris. Ivan Nova pitch well to get another start. Only mistake to Jose Bautista on a curveball that was the 39th Dave Robertson gave up the winning run to Jose Bautista also on a home run and that was the 40th. Jesus Christ. How did he got 40 home runs this season. Never hit more than 16. Is it the S word or HGH I hate to use it Chris.

    • To be honest with you, the thought of steroids never crossed my mind regarding Bautista, although I guess it’s not out of the question. However, I think it’s more likely that he’s just a good hitter and he finally discovered how to hit for power. I really don’t know.

Nova did pitch well, and I still don’t understand why he was taken out with only 70-something pitches, oh well.

  3. Hi Chris. I respect the game of baseball. Saw that Stephen Strasburg need Tommy John surgery. Now I know why teams are very cautious with their investments. And the Yankees place Phil Hughes on an inning limits. Don’t know pitching more or less cause injuries to be more frequent or less frequent.

    • Yeah, it’s very sad that Strasburg needs surgery. It hurts for the Nationals, and in all honesty, it hurts for baseball. At least it’s TJS and not shoulder surgery which is much less of a guarantee (not that TJS isn’t risky).

I am a strong believer in innings limits as long as they are implemented right. Obviously, handling a pitcher carefully will not guarantee that he will be injury free, but I do think it helps prevent injuries. I like how the Yankees are handling Hughes this year, I’m pretty sure the Nats were handling Strasburg well, and there are many other teams that are handling their young pitchers well. Unfortunately, I do not think the Yankees handled Joba well at all, but I’m getting off-topic.

  4. I know. Ivan Nova pitch well again. Ivan Nova will get another start on Sunday. What is this alleged B-12 allegation that Nova injected B-12 to Wilkin De La Rosa at Double-A Trenton Thunder last season? I didn’t know it was illegal to inject the vitamin B-12 without the help of a doctor.

    • Nova did pitch well, he has been impressive. Personally, I am not concerned about the B-12 allegations. B-12 is not a banned substance, but injecting it without a doctor is apparently illegal. I don’t know why only doctors can only inject it, but I don’t make the rules, haha. I have no idea was the consequences would be if Nova was found guilty of this charge, but while it is a big deal, it’s not on the same plane as doing steroids or HGH. I’m not worried about it, hopefully everything works out fine.

  5. Yes I agree. First start in the Yankees pinstripes in a home uniform is against Jose Bautista and the Toronto Blue Jays again for Ivan Nova.

  6. I saw on River Avenue Blues that Jesus Montero will be out for the rest of the season with minor surgery to his leg to clean out a infection. Oh well no September callup and put that speculation to rest. Next time we will see Jesus Montero again is in the 2011 Spring Training.

    • Yup, I have a post up that mentions Montero’s injury. It’s not a big deal, the only loss is that Scranton won’t have him for the playoffs. I think there was a 2% chance he got called up anyway.

  7. Andy Pettitte is pitching in a rehab game for Double-A Trenton Thunder in a playoff game but he will be allowed 65 pitches or four innings which come first. And let’s see how he feel tomorrow.

  8. Hey Chris. Who is this Steve Garrison claimed off waivers from the San Diego Padres and Wilkin De La Rosa got taken off the 40-man roster. The Yankees hope Wilkin De La Rosa pass waivers.

    • I don’t know much at all about him, but I do know that the Yankees acquiring him was probably a Kevin Towers advised move. Towers worked as the Padres GM for a while, and I’m sure he knows a lot about Garrison. Towers is a very smart man, who probably won’t be with the Yankees for long because another team will want him as a GM, but for now the Yankees have been taking advantage of his advice.

Here’s a scouting report on Steve Garrison in case you are interested.

  9. Hi Chris. Did you heard about Roy Halladay no-hitter in the postseason game on Wednesday night. I knew about Don Larsen perfect games as a Yankees. Didn’t know that Roy Halladay was only the 2nd.
